Trillium
Favorite spring flower alert!!! Have you ever been surprised by trillium while on a walk in the woods? Its large, bright flowers and unmistakable shape make it an easy flower to identify in the spring.
Look for three distinct petals arranged at equal angles to each other, giving it rotational symmetry. The prefix “tri-” makes it simple to remember this flower’s name - just think triangle, tricycle, or triceratops. Around here, we have a lot of white trillium, but it also can be found in red, pink, yellow, purple, and even green.
Enjoy this flower in the wild, but don’t pick it! It has sensitive rhizomes beneath the surface that can die if any part of the plant is removed. Take a picture instead. ;)
Go on a hike this week and keep an eye out for this spring beauty! Pair your experience with the book Flowers are Calling by Rita Gray. Great lyrical facts about the purpose of flowers beyond their beautiful blooms.
